night gathering: a ritual in four acts

Night Gathering began as a four-song EP recorded and produced in Allschwang’s home. Initiated in response to the Kavanaugh-Ford hearings in 2018, Night Gathering invokes chthonic witches, the psychopomp, darkness, and sacred night through song and incantation set to semi-improvised guzheng and violin. The cycle of dreaming, writing, recording, photographing, and printing, gifting and giving, is all considered the ritual. Listening, re-experiencing, and re-interpreting the songs become ritual, too. Since the release of the EP, Allschwang has performed an all-vocal version of Night Gathering for the Cactus Club’s 2020 Digital Dream series, and published an accompanying drawing+poetry zine for the Quarantine Public Library (which you can download from QPL for free).
